Cathedral Bells Mix (Cup and Saucer Vine) Perennial Flowers for Planting

This plant is a perennial that is grown as an annual. Reaching a length of 10-13 ft (3-4 m), the climbing plant features large, bell-shaped flowers that are 3" (7-8 cm) in diameter and purple and white in color. The flowers are used to decorate walls, fences, balconies, and verandas.

For planting, the seeds can be sown indoors from January to March, or in September to overwinter in a coldframe. The plants will flower 20 weeks from sowing, and if grown in a greenhouse, will flower for 8 months of the year. Before sowing, the seeds should be soaked in lukewarm water for two hours. The seeds should be sown 0.15 cm (½") deep, with the large flat seeds placed on edge and stuck vertically into good quality seed compost in individual small pots. The pots should be covered with plastic or cling film to retain moisture and placed on a windowsill or into a propagator. The minimum temperature for germination is 16°C (60°F), with the ideal temperature around 21°C (70°F). The compost should be kept moist but not wet, with watering from the base of the pot. Germination usually takes three to four weeks.

Once germinated, the seedlings should be moved to larger 12 cm (5") pots with stakes inserted so that the young stems have something around which to twine. The plants should then be grown on at a cooler temperature.
