The Bellflower is not only ideal for edging borders, but it also works nicely in a container planting on your sunny porch or patio! Grown from Bellflower seeds, this perennial has a mat-forming characteristic that makes it an ideal ground cover for edging the flower border. The deep green foliage makes a lovely backdrop for these gorgeous sky blue flowers.
The Bellflower is one of the low growing, perennial species that originates from the Carpathian Mountains of southeastern Europe. The small, smooth, heart shaped leaves emerge in spring, and by mid-summer they have bloomed into upturned bell-shaped flowers, about 1-2 inches wide, sitting on thin, wiry stems held up above the leaves. These flowers bloom for several weeks, producing numerous flowers on each plant, and can re-bloom sparsely sometimes throughout the summer to early fall in some cool summer climates.
Bellflower seeds requires light to germinate, so don't them cover with soil. Instead, lightly press the flower seeds into the soil to ensure good contact and keep moist until germination. If starting indoors, use a seed-starting mix and bottom water so mold won't form on the mix. Campanula seeds can also be sown directly outdoors in prepared beds after last frost. To encourage additional blooming, the flowers need to be deadheaded. Campanula plants do not tolerate foot traffic. Bellflower plants prefers sun to partial shade and well-drained soil.
Old European folklore tells that fairies once made their homes inside bellflowers. Bellflower Blue grows as a perennial in USDA Zones: 3 - 8 and prefers full sun over partial shade. Campanula Carpatica is rhizomatous and grows to a height of 8 inches with sky blue blooms from summer to fall. These low-growing flowers are a wonderful ground cover for edging borders, rock gardens, or as a container plant.
